Biggest barbecue week of the year for Waitrose

Waitrose & Partners has reported that sales excluding fuel were down 2.5% last week (to Saturday June 29) against the same week last year ‘comparing against consistently hot weather’.

The supermarket chain’s finance director Ross Avery said: “With the sun coming out at the end of the week, barbecues were the order of the day. We had our biggest barbecue week of the year for meat, with our range of kebabs proving particularly popular – accounting for four of the five top-selling products in the range.

‘Prepared desserts were up over 13% with our Layered Summer Puddings and raspberry and elderflower jellies were all in demand.

‘Waitrose & Partners was voted best retailer in Europe for farm animal welfare at the Compassion in World Farming (CiWF) Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards for a record third year in a row – an unprecedented achievement that saw us beat competition from 27 other retailers from across Europe, including 10 from the UK and others from France, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia.”
