Home Hardware celebrates 60 years in business

This month, Home Hardware Southwest Ltd is celebrating its diamond anniversary – 60 years in business.

The company was founded on the 28 November 1961 by a small group of forward thinking hardware retailers who felt that long term, they would not be able to compete profitably by following the traditional methods of distribution.

Their objectives were to purchase their products for less and build a strong membership base which would allow them the resources, facilities and staff to meet any form of competition. When the company started operating as a buying group, they had no premises and no employees, with all the work being done on a voluntary basis, split between 8 founding members.

Since 1961, Home Hardware’s membership has grown to over 450 member owned stores and has become an important part of the independent hardware market in the UK, with an annual group turnover of over £35 million. The company employees over 120 staff across two Distribution Centres at Barnstaple and Bedford.

The key to the company’s growth has been the loyalty and support of its retail members and suppliers, combined with the dedication of staff.

To mark the occasion, Home Hardware is launching a special ‘60 products in 60 hours’ promotion and members have received commemorative mugs and clocks.

Martin Elliott, chief executive officer for Home Hardware Southwest, said: “The great relationships we have developed with our members and suppliers has been one of the biggest highlights of the past 60 years. The dedication and commitment of our staff has been exceptional and is greatly appreciated. Our staff helping retailers and retailers helping their customers, all working together to secure their future. Our success certainly would not be possible without both member and supplier support, so here’s to the next 60 years and beyond!”
