Both shops and online had good increases. In shops, the best performances were from Chichester, Poole, High Wycombe, Ipswich and Chester. It was also a record week in sales for Heathrow.

John Lewis director of store development Tim Harrison commented: “The best assortment growth came from the Home directorate, up 15%. Sales of big-ticket items were well supported by both pick-up and gifting – and the Christmas shop was up 13% after a successful launch. As the nights are drawing in, lighting has seen a 16% increase.”

He added: “The milder weather does look to be finally turning and both bricks and clicks are prepared for the seasonal assortment. As the early schools break for half term this week, we begin the climb to Christmas.”
