John Lewis weekly sales up 1.7%

Total sales for John |Lewis last week (to Saturday August 25) were up 1.7% on last year.

The department store group’s head of shop trade for Scotland & North Barry Matheson said: “Home sales were down 2.1%. However, our own-brand House had a strong week with sales up 11.6% on last year, with bedroom and bath products a particular standout. Upholstery also had a good week with sales rising by 10%.

“EHT [Electricals & Home Technology] sales were down 0.9%, although both small and large electricals had good weeks with both categories up on last year. Elsewhere, headphones also had a good week.”

Fashion had a strong week too, with sales up 8%. Beauty, wellbeing and leisure had “an exceptionally good week”, with sales up 17.9% driven by price-matching through the retailer’s Never Knowingly Undersold policy. Both womenswear and menswear saw sales rise, up 6% and 4.4% respectively, with new season ranges performing well.
