A plan by councils to persuade more people to use public transport or walk to the shops could see retailers having to stump up money for their town’s parking spaces.

Under the local authority scheme department stores, shopping centres and supermarkets would reportedly have to pay £600 for each parking slot.

If the idea goes through, some retailers are likely to seek to recoup the money from customers.

Along with its environmental credentials, the initiative would also be a significant revenue earner for councils.
