Housewares suppliers are being targeted by a Mexico-based company aiming to get them to pay a substantial amount for being included in an exhibition guide.
JWP told HousewaresLive.net that it had received a letter from Expo Guide asking it to update its listing as an exhibitor at Birmingham’s Spring Fair.
“Although it mentions a free listing in the covering letter, the enclosed ‘optional form’ contains small print advising of a 1,181 Euro annual charge for three years,” said marketing manager Adam Wilkinson.
“I think this may be related to a letter mentioned during the BHETA conference I attended last year and I just wanted to make you all aware it is circulating.”
BHETA confirmed to HousewaresLive.net that a number of its members had indeed received similar approaches in the past.
“Where members believe they have become victims, BHETA provides support in the form of a legal letter drafted by our legal team that can be used to address the situation,” said a spokesperson for the association.
“We advise members to be vigilant at all times in regard to this sort of approach and periodically issue reminders through our member newsletter.”
The letter received by JWP carries an address in Mexico but the enclosed prepaid return envelope was addressed to France.
