The nation celebrates Stir-Up Sunday

Today (November 24) is the last Sunday before the season of Advent, and home cooks up and down the country will be setting to work on their Christmas puddings, as supermarket chain Waitrose & Partners reveals that online searches for ‘Christmas pudding’ are up 21% year-on-year.

Dating back to the Victorian era, the tradition of Stir-Up Sunday is a family affair, with the idea being that everyone should get a turn to mix the Christmas pudding mixture.

Searches on Waitrose.com show that shoppers have prepared for the event, with key ingredients all up compared with last year such as candied peel (+54%), dried fruit mix (+28%), brandy (+22%) and fresh nutmeg (+38%).

Online searches for ‘Duchy Organic Christmas Pudding’ and ‘Organic Christmas Pudding’ are up 41% and 44% respectively.

The classic pud also has a starring role in Waitrose & Partners and John Lewis & Partners joint Christmas advert, where the No.1 Christmas Pudding is set alight by dragon character Excitable Edgar.

Smaller puddings, suitable for intimate gatherings or Christmas meals for two, are also proving a popular choice, with searches for ‘mini Christmas puddings’ on waitrose.com up by 166% compared with last year.
