Waitrose adds UK’s first seitan burger to its growing vegan range

Waitrose & Partners claims to have introduced the first seitan burger to the UK.

Although made from wheat, seitan becomes similar to the look and texture of meat when cooked, making it a popular meat substitute. It is also called wheat gluten.

As demand for vegan dishes continues to rise, searches on Waitrose.com for vegan burgers have increased by 86%, with seitan searches up by 148%. There has also been a growing trend for vegan barbecue products, with searches up by 175% compared with last year.

The supermarket chain’s vegetarian & vegan product developer Simona Cohen-Vida said: “We’re really excited to be launching the first seitan burger. The modern barbecue is an inclusive affair with delicious products catering to all tastes and demands, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer a fantastic selection of vegan options.”
