Total sales excluding fuel at Waitrose & Partners were 1.2% lower last week (to Saturday October 19) than the same week last year.
The supermarket multiple’s supply chain director Wim Van Aalst said: “The very wet weather prompted a boost of warming foods such as ready meals.
“Many [shoppers] have been preparing for Halloween parties by stocking up on sweets and pumpkins – our mini munchkins and large carving pumpkins are proving particularly popular this year.
“And some organised shoppers are already looking further ahead to Christmas, with our festive delivery slots on Waitrose.com and our turkey orders both booking up at a faster rate than this time last year.”
